Probable Design Flaw

I never like to write a bad review. It is especially painful to write one about a small American manufacturer. I bought a Speedster S 9+ new from a fly shop in October of 2024. On my first use in Chile, the reel catastrophically failed.

To Lamson's credit, they repaired the reel quickly and did not charge me for return shipping.

The failure was a stripped nut on the spindle while I was fighting a large salmon. My leader was 25# test. The reel was set at about 3/4 of full drag. The fish was on a fairly smooth run so this did not happen when the fish jumped.

In my opinion, one of my knots, the leader, or a welded loop should have failed long before the nut on the spindle striped. In fact if the nut on the spindle is weaker than the highest setting on the drag, the materials, size of the nut or spindle, or the design were at fault.

When a nut is striped on a threaded shaft, a good deal of heat is generated which certainly compromises the threads on that shaft. The warrantee repair did not include a spindle replacement.

Perfect Saltwater 8wt Reel

I bought the 9+ and paired it with an 8wt glass rod for striped bass & bluefish around Cape Cod, the Vineyard and Nantucket and the reel is ideal for this. It is super light weight, which is nice because the glass rod is heavy, compared to graphite. Plus the drag is very smooth and consistent which really helps when you get the occasional bass that’s bigger than expected. I use half a dozen Lamsons in saltwater throughout the season and they are absolutely dependable and a pleasure to fish.

Lamson Speedster S - Midnight

This reel is perfection. There is nothing more to say. Lamson are the only fly reels that I would buy. Very happy with all of my Lamson reels. If you are on the fence. Jump over and you wont be disappointed.

Fights above its weight

Brought a two foot carp to hand in a river with the 3+. Was targeting small small mouths when this school bus lumbered by, couldn't resist. I credit this drag to the success. I have several Lamson reels for fresh and salt along with many other brands - I will continue to add more Lamsons.

Thats unreal!! I bet that was super exciting, stoked to hear the reel helped seal the deal.
